Ferrari 599 GTO: Vehicle Dynamics and Features

The characteristics the 599 GTO has inherited from the 599 XX further enhance the new GTO's sporty personality. Compared to the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, the steering wheel angle has been reduced by 15 percent and the response by 20 percent for a sharper turn-in. The chassis set up (springs, shock absorbers, anti-roll bar, and tires) and the vehicle control systems were designed and developed in parallel with the 599 XX from the very earliest project phase, allowing the 599 GTO to benefit from the same innovative methodology used for the 599 XX and F1 cars. The 599 GTO features the newest version of the Ferrari F1 gearbox with 60 millisecond shift times, making gear changes extra alert and the car even more thrilling to drive. The 599 GTO features 285/30 Michelin front tires on a 9.5" channel and 315/35 Michelin rear tires. The tires set up guarantees greater lateral acceleration, more stability in cornering and thus faster cornering all around. Rigidity-roll distribution is biased towards the rear to minimize under-steer.
In the Ferrari 599 GTO, engineers integrated the development of SCM2 (Second generation Magnetorheological Suspension Control), ESP (Electronic Stability Control) and F1-Trac (Traction Control) systems. The SCM2 is a suspension control system that uses a fluid which reacts to an electronically controlled field generated inside the damper to change its viscosity. Thanks to latest accelerometers and a diverse ECU, the control software adjusts the intensity of the magnetic field every millisecond, giving the SCM2 the possibility to read the road surface instantaneously. The Stability Control System operates independently on all four breaks whether the F1-Trac estimates grip from a broader range of frequencies. The overall effect is a sharper turn-in into bends and a more accurate line through the corner, while the SCM2 optimally and very rapidly distribute damping between front and rear axles whether the ESP acts independently from the four wheels to increase and keep under control the yaw rate. When the vehicle is coming out from a bend, the SCM2 continues monitoring the car's balance and works with the F1-Trac to maximize longitudinal and lateral acceleration, thus allowing the driver to accelerate harder and earlier.
The weight reduction efforts delivered with the 599 GTO play an important component in delivering benchmark performance and superlative driver experience. High performance composite and track-oriented technologies have been used to achieve the result, such as thinner gauge aluminum, glass, usage of CCM2 brakes, forged aluminum wheels rims, hollow roll bars, titanium wheels bolts and carbon ceramic fiber racing seat.
